Congressman Emmer raises concerns over Biden administration’s “information collection regime” targeting BTC miners Congressman Emmer expresses worries about the Biden administration’s focus on gathering information from BTC miners.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer gave a caution on February. Government agencies in the Biden administration have started gathering information on Bitcoin mining companies. Representative Emmer sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget expressing concern about the Energy Information Administration’s request for data from the Bitcoin mining industry. He pointed out that the approval of this request without allowing for public comments indicates that there must be evidence of potential harm, which Emmer does not believe exists. He wrote in a statement marked as X. Bitcoin mining does not pose a risk to public safety under any circumstances. An explanation is needed for the Office of Management and Budget’s misuse of emergency powers in targeting Bitcoin miners. He continued to support Bitcoin in his letter by stating that Bitcoin mining companies are essential to the function of the Bitcoin network. He stated that the inclusive and unrestricted design of Bitcoin’s technology represents American ideals and called for a nonpartisan approach. Emmer associated the data-gathering protocol with President Biden’s leadership, claiming that the OMB and EIA are selectively enforcing restrictive energy policies on the crypto industry. Emmer suggested that the Biden administration’s broader energy initiatives, outlined in the Inflation Reduction Act of August 2022, are the source of concern for the EIA regarding potential energy consumption increases from Bitcoin mining due to rising prices. The office is worried about excessive energy use during a severe cold weather event.
