Reddit Files to Go Public, Says It Invested in Bitcoin and Ethereum Reddit has officially filed for an initial public offering and has disclosed that it has invested in both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Reddit has recently included Bitcoin and Ethereum in its financial holdings as it prepares to become a publicly traded company, according to a filing submitted to the SEC on Thursday. The social platform mentioned in its IPO filing that it had used some of its extra funds to invest in the top two cryptocurrencies, although the exact amount was not disclosed. Additionally, Reddit revealed that it had purchased Polygon tokens to facilitate transactions for virtual items. Polygon is a network built on Ethereum for scalability. According to the filing, the company invested some of its extra cash reserves in Bitcoin and Ether, and accepted Ether and Matic as payment for virtual goods sales. Reddit stated that the value of the cryptocurrencies it holds is insignificant in the periods mentioned. The statement mentioned that Reddit keeps cryptocurrencies on hand for its product and engineering teams to utilize. If Reddit were to become a publicly traded company, its shares would be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RDDT, as indicated in the filing. Reddit has previously dabbled in the digital asset realm, having introduced Moons and Bricks in 2020, which are tokens operating on Ethereum’s blockchain testnet. Individuals who contributed to specific sections on the website could earn Moons or Bricks as rewards, which could then be used to obtain certain perks. However, Reddit abandoned the plan in November. The company has also introduced a wide-ranging project involving NFT avatars on Polygon, offering personalized versions of the “Snoo” mascot created by artists and in collaboration with companies such as the NFL. According to data from Dune, over 34 million NFT avatars have been created on Reddit so far. This information was gathered by Andrew Hayward.
