US Government Agrees To Destroy Bitcoin Mining Data Gathered The US government has agreed to eliminate the information collected from Bitcoin mining activities.

The Texas Blockchain Council’s legal action compelled the US Government to delete the data it had collected on Bitcoin mining. The lawsuit effectively halted the Biden administration’s efforts to collect data on Bitcoin miners and required them to delete any information already collected. The Texas Blockchain Council and mining company Riot Platforms took legal action in a Texas federal court on January 24 to prevent the administration from distributing a survey. The compulsory survey of miners from the U.S. Department of Energy was distributed in the beginning of January. The survey concentrated on the evolving electricity needs of cryptocurrency mining. Moreover, data from a survey conducted by the US Government pinpointed specific areas within the country where there is a significant concentration of Bitcoin mining expansion, along with information on the sources of electricity utilized for these operations. The Texas Blockchain Council believed the survey to be intrusive and potentially harmful to miners’ operations. In their rebuttal, the Bitcoin Miners argued that the survey was not adequately publicized before its release. Therefore, they asked for a permanent injunction to prevent EIA from obtaining the data without first complying with the law. Now that the lawsuit has been won, the EIA must adhere to standard notice and comment procedures before considering any similar requests in the future.
